St. Thérèse of Lisieux — The 'Little Way' Explained

She never did anything famous. She died at 24. Yet she is a Doctor of the Church. Why doing small things with great love is the secret to holiness.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux (The Little Flower) realized something depressing: She wasn't strong enough to be a great martyr like St. Joan of Arc. She wasn't smart enough to be a theologian. She fell asleep during prayer.

The Elevator to Heaven

She read in Scripture: "Whoever is a little one, let him come to me." She decided to engage an elevator to heaven: The Arms of Jesus. Her "Little Way" is simple:

  1. Accept your weakness.
  2. Trust completely in God's mercy.
  3. Do every tiny action (folding laundry, smiling at annoying people) with immense love.

The Rose Novena

She promised: "I will spend my heaven doing good on earth. I will let fall a shower of roses." Millions of people pray her novena hoping for a sign (a rose).
