In the Catholic tradition, we don't walk alone. We are surrounded by a "great cloud of witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1). A [Patron Saint](/guides/who-is-my-patron-saint) is a special saint chosen to be your intercessor and advocate in heaven.

But how do you find "your" saint? Here are four proven ways to discover your spiritual best friend.

1. By Name (Baptismal Saint)

The most traditional method. If your name is "Mary," your patron is the Blessed Virgin. If it's "Joseph," it's the foster father of Jesus. Even if your name isn't explicitly biblical, it might be a derivative (e.g., "Austin" comes from Augustine).

2. By Profession or Hobby

The Church has a patron saint for almost everything!

  • Doctors: St. Luke
  • Teachers: St. John Baptist de La Salle
  • Musicians: St. Cecilia
  • Athletes: St. Sebastian
  • Coders/Programmers: St. Isidore of Seville
  • Mothers: St. Monica
  • Cooks: St. Martha

3. By Life Situation (The "Saint Who Chose Me")

Sometimes, a saint "stalks" you. You hear their name in a homily, then see a statue of them, then a friend gives you their prayer card. Pay attention! God often sends specific saints to help us with specific struggles.

  • Anxiety: St. Dymphna
  • Impossible Causes: St. Jude
  • Lost Items: St. Anthony
  • Cancer: St. Peregrine
  • Job Loss: St. Cajetan

4. By Birthday (Feast Day)

Check the Liturgical Calendar. Who is the saint celebrated on your birthday? It is no coincidence that you were born on their feast day.

How to Build a Relationship

Once you find your saint:

  1. Read their biography. Know their story.
  2. Pray to them daily. A simple "St. [Name], pray for me" is enough.
  3. Keep their image. Put a statue or picture in your room.
  4. Celebrate their feast day. Go to Mass and have a special meal.

FAQ

Can I have more than one?

Absolutely. You can have a "saint squad."

What if I don't feel a connection?

Relationships take time. Pray to the Holy Spirit to reveal the right saint for this season of your life.

Do I have to pick a saint for Confirmation?

Yes, it is traditional to choose a Confirmation name (different from your baptismal name) to mark your adult commitment to the faith. Choose a saint whose virtues you want to imitate.
