Demons hate holy water. They hate blessed salt. And everyday problems — anxiety, nightmares, discord — can often be alleviated by physically blessing the space where you live.
Here are three powerful ways to claim your home for Christ.
1. The Epiphany Door Blessing (Chalking the Door)
When: Feast of the Epiphany (Jan 6). What: Writing the year and the initials of the Three Kings (C-M-B) on the lintel of your front door. The Formula: 20 + C + M + B + 26 Meaning: Christus Mansionem Benedicat (May Christ Bless this House). Also Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar. Why: It invites Jesus to be a guest in your home every time you enter or leave.
2. Holy Water
Every Catholic home should have Holy Water (get it from the font at church; bring a bottle!).
- Sprinkle it: In bedrooms to ward off nightmares.
- Drink it: A tiny drop in a sick person's tea (St. Teresa of Avila swore by this).
- Bless yourself: Whenever you leave the house.
3. Blessed Salt
Elisha used salt to purify water (2 Kings 2:21). Jesus called us the "salt of the earth." Unlink Holy Water, salt doesn't evaporate.
- Usage: Sprinkle a line of blessed salt across your thresholds or in the corners of rooms to create a spiritual barrier.
4. The St. Benedict Medal
The most powerful medal of protection against evil. Place one above your main door or bury four of them at the four corners of your property.
FAQ
Can I bless my own house?
Yes. By virtue of your baptism, you are a "priest, prophet, and king." You have spiritual authority over your own home and children. (But for a major blessing or if you suspect serious demonic activity, get a priest).
Does the chalk have to be blessed?
Yes. Most parishes bless baskets of chalk on Epiphany Sunday for you to take home.
