"I believe in science, so I can't be Catholic." This is a false dichotomy. The man who proposed the Big Bang Theory (Fr. Georges Lemaître) was a Catholic priest.
The Church's Teaching (Humani Generis, 1950)
Pope Pius XII laid down the rules:
- Body: You CAN believe that the human body evolved from pre-existing living matter (apes/primates) over millions of years.
- Soul: You MUST believe that the soul was created immediately by God. The soul did not evolve. Matter cannot evolve into spirit.
- Adam and Eve: You MUST believe in a literal first pair of parents (Monogenism). You cannot believe that "Adam" was just a metaphor for a group of thousands of humans (Polygenism), because that destroys the doctrine of Original Sin.
What about Genesis?
The Church teaches that the first chapters of Genesis are historical in a "true sense," but they are written in mythological language.
- The "7 Days" could be 7 eras (or 13.8 billion years).
- The "Rib" could be a symbol of shared nature.
- The "Snake" is Satan.
The point of Genesis is Theological, not Scientific. It tells us Who created (God) and Why (out of love), not How (the mechanics).
Conclusion
God is the Author of the Book of Scripture AND the Book of Nature. Truth cannot contradict truth. If science says the universe is 13.8 billion years old, we say: "Wow, God is patient."
