Every year, Christians complain: "They are crossing Christ out of Christmas!" Actually, they aren't.
The Greek "X"
In Greek, the word for Christ is Xristos. The first letter "X" (Chi) has been used as a shorthand for "Christ" since the catacombs. Early scribes used "X" to save space on expensive parchment. Emperor Constantine put the "Chi-Rho" (XP) on his shields.
Verdict
"Xmas" literally means "Christ's Mass." It is not a secular slur. It is ancient Christian code. So, if you see it, smile. The name of Jesus is there, hidden in plain sight.
