The Miraculous Medal: Meaning and Prayer
The Miraculous Medal
Originally called the Medal of the Immaculate Conception, it became known as the "Miraculous Medal" because of the countless miracles associated with it.
The Apparition
In 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a novice Sister of Charity, St. Catherine Labouré, in Paris. Shows revealed herself standing on a globe, crushing a serpent, with rays of light streaming from her fingers.
Around her appeared the words:
"O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
Mary asked for a medal to be struck in this image. She promised that "All who wear it will receive great graces; they should wear it around the neck. Graces will be abounded for persons who wear it with confidence."
The Symbolism
- Front: Mary standing on the world (her Queenship) and crushing the snake (Genesis 3:15). The rays from her hands symbolize graces. Some fingers have no rays, representing graces that people forget to ask for.
- Back: A large 'M' surmounted by a Cross (Mary's union with Jesus). Below are two hearts: the Sacred Heart of Jesus (crowned with thorns) and the Immaculate Heart of Mary (pierced by a sword). Twelve stars surround the image (Revelation 12:1).
The Conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne
One of the most famous miracles involved Alphonse Ratisbonne, a Jewish banker who hated the Church. A friend challenged him to wear the medal and pray the Memorare. He had a vision of Mary in a church in Rome and was instantly converted, becoming a Jesuit priest.
Wear this medal with faith. It is a badge of Mary's love and protection.
