How to Go to Confession: A Step-by-Step Catholic Guide
The Sacrament of Confession (also known as Reconciliation or Penance) is one of the most beautiful gifts of the Catholic Church. It allows us to be forgiven of our sins and reconciled with God.
If it's been a while since your last confession, don't worry. The priest is there to help you, not judge you.
Step 1: Examination of Conscience
Before you go to the priest, take some time to reflect on your sins. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you remember.
Ask yourself:
- Have I missed Mass on Sundays or Holy Days?
- Have I taken the Lord's name in vain?
- Have I been angry, resentful, or unforgiving?
- Have I lied, stolen, or cheated?
- Have I looked at impure images or engaged in impure acts?
- Have I been proud, envious, or lazy?
Step 2: Go to the Confessional
When it's your turn, enter the confessional. You can usually choose to kneel behind a screen (anonymous) or sit face-to-face.
Begin by saying:
"Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been [state how long] since my last confession."
Step 3: Confess Your Sins
List your sins to the priest. Try to be simple and clear. Start with the most difficult ones. If you are unsure if something is a sin, you can ask.
Tip: Confess mortal sins in kind (what it was) and number (how many times).
Step 4: Penance and Act of Contrition
The priest will give you a penance (usually a few prayers to say) and ask you to make an Act of Contrition.
Act of Contrition:
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.
Step 5: Absolution
The priest will then pray the Prayer of Absolution. This is the moment your sins are forgiven!
"I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
Answer: "Amen."
Step 6: Go in Peace
The priest will dismiss you, saying "Go in peace." You answer "Thanks be to God."
Leave the confessional and return to the church pews to pray your penance and thank God for His mercy.
