John the Baptist was confused too. He tried to stop Him: "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Jesus replied: "Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness."
3 Reasons
- Solidarity: He got in line with sinners not because He was one, but to show He stands with us. He took our place.
- Sanctification: Water cleanses us. But Jesus cleansed the water. By entering the Jordan, He made all water capable of being holy (Sacrament of Baptism).
- The Trinity: It is the first time all three Persons appear together implicitly. The Voice (Father), the Dove (Spirit), the Beloved Son.
