ZACHEUS THOMAS AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Be the first to review

Brief HistoryZTT or Trinity as we are popularly known in the Namibian Annual Conference, is one of the historic churches established by the break-away ring-leaders of July 3rd, 1946. The late Rev. Zacheus Thomas, founder of this church and first Presiding Elder of the Keetmanshoop District, initiated the foundation under very harsh socio-political and economical circumstances. An outspoken advocate of human rights he was the key player in discussions between Namibian pioneers and the AME Church in South Africa, and the church also served as a transit point for many Namibians who fled into independent Bostwana as refugees. Due to his ill health and old-age he requested the bishop for retirement and was succeeded in 1955 by the Rev. Nicholas N. Christians, who had built succesfully on the firm foundations. The membership has increased fourfold and reported more than 800 active members when he too retired in 1997 as both pastor and presiding elder. The current leader, the Rev. Hendrik /Gariseb is one of the promising young men who have attended R R Wright Theological Seminary and University of Namibia. He is currently in distance program reading a Masters in Theology from the University of Namibia. He has vast experience in the Christian Ministry, having pastored at St. Mark’s AME Church, Gibeon; St. James AME Church, Mariental; St. Johns AME Church, Walvisbay; St. Gustav AME Church, Okahandja; and Purity AME Church, Wanaheda. He is married to a school secretary, Mrs Johanna /Gariseb (nee Swartbooi) and the couple are blessed with three sons. He is teaching fulltime and is Deputy Headmaster of J A Nel Senior Secondary School.
