For your information….We’re pleased you’ve found us! Thank you for taking the time to do so.The Salvation Army in Harpenden, situated in the town centre, exists to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, by word and deed, in a thriving, affluent Hertfordshire town (population 37,000). Harpenden is situated close to London, Luton and St. Albans, and The Salvation Army is a full and active member of Churches Together in Harpenden. Although membership rolls currently stand at the relatively small total of 69, one of the great strengths of Harpenden Corps is the age-range of its congregation. We also like to feel we offer a warm welcome to friends and visitors. Babies and toddlers are catered for within the weekly programme, teenagers meet monthly to chill out with pizza and Coke, there are a number of young adults present, and the Over Sixties Club caters for the elderly. Food features prominently on the list of priorities
, with a Curry Club once a month (at least!) for the younger men (meeting at The Harpenden Tandoori Restaurant), and The Four M’s Club (Men’s Monthly Monday Meeting) for those aged 50 who prefer fish & chips to curry! The Ladies’ Meeting on Thursday afternoon provides an opportunity for ladies to meet together. The musical sections of The Salvation Army in Harpenden maintain a high standard. The band, under the leadership of Bandmaster Nigel Hills, assists with worship and congregational singing, the Songster Brigade (choir), under the leadership of Songster Leader Roland Hills, contributes a great deal to the meetings, and the Singing Company (junior choir), under the leadership of Pauline Emeny, never fails to bring a worthwhile contribution to Sunday morning worship.Meetings at Harpenden Corps are informal, relaxed, and open to all. A creche operates on Sunday mornings (for the under 5’s), and the meetings last from 10.15am until 11.30am. Meetings are followed by tea & coffee, and this is followed by Adult Sunday School, an informal Bible Study/Discussion Group. After Adult Sunday School, the band usually takes to the streets of Harpenden for open-air evangelism, or to visit the local hospital. In addition to these activities, some public houses are visited on Friday evenings, where The War Cry and Kid’s Alive (the Army’s gospel papers) are sold. A Saturday coffee morning also features as a means of contacting and befriending local people. Plans are currently underway to raise money to improve facilities for disabled people, at our hall in Leyton Road. These plans are at a very early stage just now, but we hope to raise something in the region of ?50,000.00 to carry out essential renovations, improving access, etc.
