The life of St.Hieritha’s ChurchWe are an Anglican church in a small village community of about 650 with a daughter church in the nearby village of Umberleigh. We have a mixture of Sunday services, both traditional and more contemporary. There is a vacancy for Sunday School leaders at the moment, but there are still activities for children to do on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays when the services are not so “child freindly”. We are a warm and welcoming church, committed to being the family of God in worship and service, caring within the community and seeking to introduce others to the Christian faith. We very much believe in ‘faith in action’ and are concerned to make the gospel of Jesus Christ vibrant and attractive for the age in which we live. We have very good links with the local community who support the work of the church even if it is not by regular attendance. Newcomers are always welcome.
We share much of our ministry with the adjacent parish of Filleigh with whom we have a JMT (Joint Ministry Team) who work with the vicar in looking at the various aspects of our ministry and we are also part of the South Molton Team Ministry. In this Team we are looking to do more together in such areas as youthwork and training.
In the past we have run youth groups including a youth alpha group and a children’s group with the church school adjacent to the church of St.Hieritha. We have very good links and involvement with the school, the vicar taking regular assemblies and being involved wherever appropriate and possible. Our Mission Statement is ‘REACHING UPWARDS, REACHING OUTWARDS’ and we have a 5yr Vision with objectives to help it become a reality! We run housegroups and are always open to newcomers. May God bless you in Christ.

The Church of the Good Shepherd, UmberleighThis is a small, quaint wooden ‘chapel like’ church in the village of Umberleigh about 3miles West of Chittlehampton in Devon. In contrast to the ‘Cathedral like’ splendour of the parish church, the Good Shepherd is a simple and plain building – attractive and ideal for worship. We have a 1st Sunday family communion service there and attempt to integrate the children fully. The service has an informal family-like atmosphere whilst retaining the reverence in worship. Newcomers are always welcome. Both churches in the parish have a good working relationship with the schools in the two villages and regularly hold school services.
