Ministries of the Church

Phillips Memorial C.M.E. Church has an active Youth and Young Adult Ministry, an electrifying Music Ministry, a dynamic Evangelism Ministry and an ongoing Community Outreach Program.
The Lucy Phillips Memorial Colored Methodist Episcopal Church was organized under the direction of the late Z.Z. Johnson, his wife assisted by Mrs. Avant, Lillian Wiggins, Mrs Dwellington and Mrs. Tommie Lewis. Its first location was south 7th Street and Jefferson. The membership grew and in February 1946 ground breaking services for our present edifice was held; completed in 1947 at a cost of 20,000. In 1962 the name of the church was officially changed to Phillips Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
We have hosted several District and Annual Conferences, Leadership Training Schools, Laymen and Missionary Workshops. We have had eight Bishops, 7 Presiding Elders and many inspiring Pastors. Trials and storms have sought and found us, but we were not defeated. We have been strengthened and made able to endure.

The loyal members of Phillips Memorial shall continue to adhere to the Gospel of Christ and attend to the growth of the church. We are thankful and ever so grateful God has remained with us these 93 years.

A Prayer
Father, I ask you to bless my friends reading this right now. I am asking You to minister to their spirit at this very moment. Where there is pain, give them Your peace and mercy. Where there is self doubting, release a renewed confidence in Your ability to work through them. Where there is tiredness, or exhaustion, I ask You to give them understanding, patience, and strength as they learn submission to Your leading. Where there is spiritual stagnation, I ask You to renew them by revealing Your nearness, and by drawing them into greater intimacy with You.
Where there is fear, reveal Your love, and release to them Your courage. Where there is a sin blocking them, reveal it, and break its hold over my friend’s life. Bless their finances, give them greater vision, and raise up leaders, and friends to support, and encourage them. Give each of them discernment to recognize the evil forces around them, and reveal to them the power they have in You to defeat it. I ask You to do these things in Jesus’ name

Defeat Is Not An Option!

Rev. Brendalyn Martin

Sometimes it’s so easy to just give up. Sometimes the battles seem too difficult to overcome, too much to endure. Sometimes we feel that we just can’t take any more.

No matter how hard I’ve fought, how long I’ve fought or how many disappointments I’ve faced, one thing I know. . .”Defeat is not an option.”

The more we want something, the harder we try to get it. At times it consumes our every thought, and becomes the main goal of our lives. We think about it all the time, we dream about it when we sleep and even use the phrase, “I can almost taste it.” It becomes so important in our lives, that “defeat is not an option.”

We need to apply this same principle to our spiritual lives. Instead, we allow worldly things to cloud our judgment, impair our vision and plug our ears. We hear what we want to hear, see what we want to see and make excuses when things do not work out right. I tried, but those people on my job make me so mad. I was in a good mood, until my children ticked me off. I don’t have time to study my Bible, I have too much work to do. . .

When we see the advertisement for the fifty percent off sale at the mall, we seem to find time to go shopping, even though we were too busy to open the Bible and read one verse. When our favorite team is playing in town or on the TV, we seem to find time to watch the game, but we can’t make it to church services on Sunday morning. Then we ask why God hasn’t answered our prayers. Why should He? If we don’t make time for Him, how can we expect Him to make time for us?

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, ask my forgiveness, seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear them from Heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land.” I Cor

How can we humble ourselves, when our backs are so stiff, they’ll break if we lean forward, let alone bow down and humble ourselves. Of course we don’t have to physically bow down in order to humble ourselves, but we have to have an attitude of humility and we have to be willing to acknowledge God as the Lord of our lives. How can we do that, when we make Him take a back seat to our little “gods?”

Anything we put ahead of God, has become a small “god.” That includes our family, friends, job, home, car, swimming pool, etc. We keeps pushing God back, while crying about the blessings we have not received, and complaining about how hard we tried, but keep failing. Maybe it’s time to take a good look in the mirror and find out what’s looking back at you.

God’s Word, the Bible, contains numerous promises of blessings, but we can’t claim them until we come into a position of grace. In John’s greeting to Gaius in 3 John , he says ,”I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in good health, just as your spirit prospers. If our spirits aren’t prospering, how can we prosper in other areas of our lives. The Bible says “Seek Ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all things will be given unto to.” If we want to prosper in our relationships, our finances, our jobs, we first have to prosper in our spirits, and we can’t do that until we first seek the kingdom of God.

We have to get up off our “I’m so cute attitudes”, our “I did it all, all by myself” attitudes, and “my way or the highway” frame of minds and let go and let God. Let God have control of our lives, let him be the pilot and be content to be the passengers. God knows where He’s going and where He wants to take us, but we get in the way. We get on the wrong flight, take a detour down “I’m so bad” highway, and take a vacation in “If it feels good, do it,” city, and kick back and relax with the “It’s My Thang” vocal group. We have set ourselves up for defeat!

If we are true “Born Again” Christians, rooted in the Word of God, we will not allow anything to come between us and our Savior. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow will slow us down. No amount of tribulation, adversity, frustration or depression will stop us from delivering His Word. We will rise above our differculties, take on an attitude of gratude, reach out for the “Joy of His Salvation” and triump in the “Anoiting of His grace,” for we are the “Beloved of our Father, and “Defeat Is Not An Option.
