KAPUNDA UNITING CHURCH

History of the KAPUNDA UNITING CHURCH…In the early days of Kapunda, before the Methodist Church was established, it was the practise of the early Methodists to gather in one another’s homes for Divine Worship.
On April 15th, 1849, a chapel measuring 300 feet long by 25 feet wide, was built and was situated in Main Street on what was the site of the Eudunda farmers’ Co-operative Store. The cost of this first Church was 300 pounds. The Rev. J.C. Symons was then the Minister in charge. The Main Street chapel soon proved to be too small and tenders were called for the erection of a new Chruch, resulting in the acceptance of that of a Mr. Fry. Fry’s tender of 1970 pounds was later increased by the amount of 400 pounds to cover the cost of building a new manse. The new Church (the one in use today) was opened on 25th December, 1858, the Revs. Butters and Waterhouse officiating at the services.
A cemetery that had been situated at the rear of the original Main Street Church was closed in May 1855 and two of the older and better preserved headstones were saved and resited alongside the new Church.
Rentals for the pews were two shillings per quarter for the centre, and one shilling and sixpence for the sides; both being payable in advance.
In 1875, the Manse was converted into classrooms and extended and the present manse was built on Clare Road, the whole operation costing 1300 pounds. The classroom building was further modified in 1844 when what is now the Church Hall was built on to the front of it. The Church itself has been modified in 1877 by the addition of a gallery.
The amalgamation of various Churches in the year 1900 saw the Wesleyan, Bible Christian and Primitive Methodists uniting to form the Methodist Church.
Early in its formation, the Kapunda Wesleyan Church frequently had difficulty in seating all its congregation, even in the new Church, and the circuit was so big that some services were held at 5 o’clock on Sunday mornings so that the Minister could attend all his Churches in the one day.
