Our HistoryIn the year of 1939, Celia Gregg Memorial A.M.E. Church was founded by the Rev. J. W. Jefferson and named after the wife of Bishop Andrew Gregg; for her mighty work as a missionary. Rev. George W, Vann, the second pastor, made giant footprints as he served with love and devotion. The influence he wielded is still evident in this loving monument of God the Father. W.L. Childs was the third pastor. A larger congregation membership was reached and the need for a new site became clear. To him we are indebted for the purchase of the present site. Rev. Paul Turner further advanced the history of Celia Gregg by placing it in a position of prominence, nobility and great recognition.
In 1970, Rev. Anne Barton’s presence brought great physical changes for the church during her seven years of service. In 1978, the great Rev. Jonathan A. Dames took over the pulpit of Celia Gregg, bring with him many years of “Kingdom-Building”. His stay of one year was much too short, but very effective. In 1979, Rev. Howard W. Marcus was placed here and left his mark. In October of 1979, Rev. Alghia Griffin furthered the cause. Under his leadership the mortgage was retired. In 1982, Rev. John McClellan placed his loving touch on Celia Gregg. During his ten years, many major refurbishments were accomplished. In 1992, Rev. Oscar Walden, Jr. strived to keep the flag of Celia Gregg unfurled.
God richly blessed us again under the leadership of our present pastor, the Rev. Norris E. Jackson, Jr. Pastor Norris (as he likes to be called) holds a Masters of Divinity degree from McCormick Seminary and will soon be returning for a Ph.D. in Community development and family care. He has been an ordained minister of the AME church for 6 years and Pastor of Celia Gregg AME church for 4 years.
Since 1997, Pastor Norris has brought a spirit of love, enthusiasm and determination to Celia Gregg. The membership has responded and the church has increased by 100%, and through his nurturing, love and constant attention the members have become more faithful in attendance, financial contributions and scriptural growth and development. Each Sunday morning worship service is spirit-filled and memorable. There are now three choirs that cheerfully serve, a faithful usher board, and the renowned Men of Valor who oversee the church property.
