Mission and Brief HistoryThe Gibeon Presiding Elder District fully share the Mission Statement of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and aims to equip the rank-and-file through human resources development programs. It was in Gibeon, on July 3rd, 1946 that the heroic founding fathers drafted and delivered the break-away letter to the racist German Rhynish Missionary Society. The mastermind behind this move was the late Rev. Petrus Andreas Jod (the 1st Presiding Elder)in the company of Daniel Dausab, Markus Witbooi, Jakobus Jod, Markus Kooper, Zacheus Thomas; Dirk van Neel; Johannes Ludwig, Simon Goeieman, Petrus Andreas Schmidt, Wilem Moses Jod; Jonas Richter and many unsung heroes of African Methodism. The Rev. Petrus Andreas Schmidt, who was task to deliver the letter to the German missionaries, succeeded him in 1958 and led the Gibeon District to a period of expansion and romance with African Methodism. It was under his leadership that the new Hoachanas PE District was formed in 1980. He retired in 1994 from the active ministry was a member of the St. Peter’s AME Church, Maltahohe as an active advisor to pastors, presiding elders and bishops, and died in the third quarter of 1999. Rev. Dr. Hendrik Witbooi succeeded him amidst his busy schedule in the Namibian government as both Vice-President of SWAPO (the ruling party) and Deputy-Prime Minister in the Cabinet. The Gibeon District has actively participated in the Liberation struggle, resisting South African bantu education and providing communities with alternative Pre-primary, Primary and Secondary Schools based on the British Cambridge System. The independent Namibian government has also adopted the same education system. The Gibeon PE District is the leading district and have provided the majority of lay and clergy leadership in the Namibia Annual Conference.
