Hell is a difficult teaching—but it's part of Catholic doctrine. Let's explore what Jesus taught.
What Jesus Said
"Enter Through the Narrow Gate"
In Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus says most people take the "broad road to destruction"—but the "narrow gate" leads to life.
"The Fire Will Never Be Quenched"
In Mark 9:48, Jesus says: "Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched."
"Depart from Me"
In Matthew 25:41, Jesus says to the wicked: "Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."
What Hell Is
1. Eternal Separation
Hell is not primarily about fire—it's about being eternally separated from God.
2. The Result of Free Will
God doesn't "send" people to hell—people choose to reject Him.
3. Real
The Church has always taught hell is real—not metaphorical.
The Catholic Understanding
1. Most People Won't Go
The Church has always believed that most people will be saved—through God's mercy.
2. We Don't Know Who's In Hell
We can't say for certain that any specific person is in hell. Only God knows.
3. We Should Fear (Appropriately)
We're called to "fear" hell—but as a motivator to avoid sin, not as a terror.
