What Are the Deuterocanonical Books?
The 7 Books
- Tobit
- Judith
- Wisdom
- Sirach (Ecclesiasticus)
- Baruch
- 1 Maccabees
- 2 Maccabees (Plus parts of Daniel and Esther)
The History
These books were part of the Greek Septuagint (the Bible used in the early Church). They were included in the Latin Vulgate (St. Jerome's translation).
Why the Difference?
The Reformation
In the 1500s, Protestant reformers removed these books—mainly because some Protestant leaders didn't consider them authoritative.
The Council of Trent
In response, the Catholic Church affirmed these books at the Council of Trent (1546).
