"All are welcome." You see it on the sign outside, but inside, Catholic Mass can feel... complicated. When do I kneel? What are they saying? Why is everyone staring at that golden box?
If you are a non-Catholic (Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, atheist, or seeker), you are 100% welcome to attend Mass. We are honored to have you.
Here is a simple guide to help you feel comfortable in the pew.
What is the Mass?
It is not just a "service" with songs and a sermon. It is a sacrifice. We believe we are re-presenting the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. It is solemn, ancient, and ritualistic.
3 Rules for Visitors
1. You CAN participate in almost everything.
- Sing: Please do!
- Pray: Join in the Our Father.
- Stand/Sit/Kneel: You can follow the crowd. If you are uncomfortable kneeling, you can sit respectfully while others kneel.
2. You CANNOT receive Holy Communion.
When the line forms to go up to the front, please remain in your seat or, in some parishes, go up with your arms crossed over your chest (like an 'X') to receive a blessing instead.
Why? Is it because I'm not "good enough"? No! It is because Communion is a sign of full unity. By saying "Amen" to the Eucharist, we are saying, "I believe everything the Catholic Church teaches is true, and I believe this is truly the Body and Blood of Jesus." If you are not Catholic, you don't believe that yet — so asking you to say "Amen" would be asking you to lie. It is a sign of respect for our different beliefs.
3. Be respectful of the silence
Mass has many moments of silence. It is not "dead air"; it is prayer space. Please silence your phone completely.
What to Expect (The Order of Mass)

- Eucharist: The center of the Mass. The priest consecrates the bread and wine. We kneel in worship.
- Communion: Catholics receive the host.
- Dismissal: "Go in peace."
FAQ
What should I wear?
"Business casual" is a safe bet. Avoid shorts, tank tops, or hats (for men).
Do I have to put money in the basket?
No. You are a guest. The collection is for members to support their parish. Feel free to pass the basket to the next person.
Will anyone try to convert me?
Unlike some churches, Catholics are generally introverted before Mass. People will likely smile but leave you alone to pray. If you want to talk to someone, introduce yourself to the priest after Mass!
