Angels are real—and important in Catholic teaching. Here's what the Church teaches.
What Are Angels?
Created Beings
Angels are pure spirits—created beings (not "gods").
Their Nature
They have intelligence and will—but no bodies (though they can appear in bodily form).
The Archangels
The Three Named
- Michael: "Who is like God?"—the warrior who defeated Satan
- Gabriel: "God is my strength"—the messenger (to Daniel, Mary)
- ** Raphael:** "God has healed"—the healer (in Tobit)
The Angelic Hierarchy
Nine Choirs
The Church teaches there are nine choirs (ranks) of angels:
- Seraphim
- Cherubim
- Thrones
- Dominations
- Principalities
- Powers
- Virtues
- Archangels
- Angels
Guardian Angels
Each Person Has One
Jesus says: "See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven" (Matthew 10:10).
Conclusion: Real Beings
Angels are real—spiritual beings who serve God and assist us.
